Why an industry require a Power factor improvement system?

Advantages of Power Factor Improvement system

• Maintain the Power factor up to 0.99 to Unity
• Increase the use of section demand
• Saving on Electricity bill depending on Tariff, Avoid Power Factor Penalty and getting Rebate on Power Factor given by Utility or Electricity Board.
• Lower Losses in cable, Conductor and Transformer.
• Helps in maintaining system voltage.

Disadvantages of lower Power Factor

• Require higher source to feed the load. A motor of 100 KW at 0.8 PF will require 120 KVA power.
• More losses in transmitting power due to higher current. 20% current is more.
• More Voltage drop at motor end.
• All equipments like breaker, transformer, cable etc have to work at higher current and capacity.
• More electricity bill due to lower power factor penalty & more KVA demand.
